Marco Bussoli, architect, graduated from the University of Ferrara in 2023 with a thesis on the history and restoration of the Basilica of St. Francis in Ferrara. After graduating, he was first an intern and then a research fellow at LaboRA – Laboratory of Architectural Restoration – on the topic of Digital tools for the knowledge and conservation of historic cities: applications and experiments in architectural history and restoration. He also attended the School of Specialisation in Architectural and Landscape Heritage. His research focused on the relationship between architecture and cities throughout history, with particular regard to the transformations of cities in the 20th century and the implications these had for conservation.

Marco Bussoli, architetto, si laurea presso l’Università di Ferrara nel 2023 con una tesi sulla storia e il restauro della basilica di San Francesco di Ferrara. Dopo la laurea è prima tirocinante e poi borsista di ricerca presso il LaboRA – Laboratorio di Restauro Architettonico – sul tema Strumenti digitali per la conoscenza e la conservazione della città storica: applicazioni e sperimentazioni tra storia dell’architettura e restauro, frequenta inoltre la Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Architettonici e del Paesaggio. Le sue ricerche si sono concentrate sul rapporto tra architettura e città nella storia, con particolare riguardo alle trasformazioni novecentesche della città e alle implicazioni conservative che queste hanno avuto.

Research proposal (English version)

Title: Implementing Conservation Strategies in Historic Urban Landscapes: Towards a Cohesive Theoretical and Practical Framework in the Heritage Discourse

Description: The research addresses the protection of historic urban landscapes (HUL), as defined in the 2011 UNESCO Recommendations, in a context marked by growing threats: climate change, mass tourism, financial speculation and traumatic events, such as earthquakes and floods risk, erasing the historical layers of cities. The key issue is the fragility of urban heritage, no longer understood as a set of isolated “objects”, but as a complex system of material, spatial and human relationships. Generally, the actual operational and legislative capacity to apply these principles is poor, and the protection policies implemented tend to “freeze” assets rather than govern change.

The overall objective is to define a cohesive theoretical and practical framework that fills this gap by integrating heritage conservation into urban development processes. Specifically, the research aims to:

- Critically analyse the national and international state of the art on the concept of HUL and current methods of urban heritage protection in Italy;

- Develop an analytical methodology to evaluate significant case studies, identifying good practices and recurring critical issues;

- Develop operational guidelines and a validated monitoring system to serve as technical support for administrations and designers.

Through a qualitative approach, the study aims to have a real and tangible impact, aligning itself with Goal 11 of the 2030 Agenda to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Titolo: Implementazione di strategie di conservazione nei paesaggi urbani storici: verso un quadro teorico e pratico coerente nel dibattito sul patrimonio culturale

Descrizione: La ricerca affronta la tutela dei paesaggi urbani storici (HUL), come definiti nelle Raccomandazioni UNESCO del 2011, in un contesto segnato da minacce crescenti: cambiamento climatico, turismo di massa, speculazioni finanziarie ed eventi traumatici come terremoti e alluvioni rischiano di annullare le stratificazioni storiche delle città. Il tema cardine è la fragilità del patrimonio urbano, inteso non più come insieme di singoli "oggetti" isolati, ma come un sistema complesso di relazioni materiali, spaziali e umane. Generalmente l'effettiva capacità operativa e legislativa di applicare tali principi è scarsa e le politiche di tutela attuate tendono a "congelare" i beni anziché governarne il cambiamento.

L'obiettivo generale è definire una cornice teorico-pratica coesa che colmi questo vuoto, integrando la conservazione del patrimonio nei processi di sviluppo urbano. Nello specifico, la ricerca si propone di:

- Analizzare criticamente lo stato dell'arte nazionale e internazionale sul concetto di HUL e sulle attuali modalità di tutela dei patrimoni urbani in Italia;

- Sviluppare una metodologia d'analisi per valutare casi studio significativi, identificando buone pratiche e criticità ricorrenti;

- Elaborare linee guida operative e un sistema di monitoraggio validato che fungano da supporto tecnico per amministrazioni e progettisti.

Attraverso un approccio qualitativo, lo studio mira a un impatto reale e tangibile, allineandosi al Goal 11 dell'Agenda 2030 per rendere le città e le comunità umane inclusive, sicure e sostenibili.
