Un workshop internazionale al Dipartimento di Architettura dell’Università di Ferrara

Il periodo di formazione di coloro che si addentrano per la prima volta nel campo della ricerca scientifica è un momento delicato e d’imprinting delle caratteristiche del futuro studioso. Nell’ambito dei programmi di formazione del terzo livello o dottorale non sempre, tuttavia, è prevista una fase iniziale dedicata a focalizzare le regole di un gioco sempre in aggiornamento. Logiche, sequenze e schemi operativo-procedurali che – pur basati su teorie e metodologie scientifiche codificate nel tempo -  sono in continuo divenire per motivi diversi. Le complessità emergenti - oggi rilevabili a titolo esemplificativo nella multidisciplinarietà delle ricerche piuttosto che nella diffusione di studi sulle tecnologie immateriali applicate a tutto campo – determinano una nuova e puntuale analisi dei modelli di formazione ed un adattamento degli stessi alle esigenze in atto.

È per questo motivo che, nell’ambito delle attività formative dell’International Doctorate Architecture and Urban Planning del Dipartimento di Architettura dell’Università di Ferrara con la Polis University di Tirana e i loro Associate Members, si è concepito un workshop di lavoro con i dottorandi capace di offrire loro diverse opportunità di lettura delle tendenze in atto negli ambiti curriculari Architecture e Urban Planning che si accingono a frequentare.

Il Workshop del corso dottorale internazionale, nella sua seconda edizione, si articola in tre distinte iniziative seminariali alternate da momenti d’incontro dei PhD candidates con gli ospiti e i loro docenti istituzionali e meeting operativi sui temi proposti.

Si inizia con il seminario: “Urban project and city Re-generation in the experience of Françoise Grether” che vede la partecipazione dell'architetto e urbanista francese - già vincitore del Gran Prix de L’Urbanisme 2012 - François Grether che presenterà alcune sue recenti esperienze (numerose delle quali ancora in corso) di progettazione e gestione dei processi di trasformazione di aree urbane di città francesi quali, ad esempio, Parigi e Lione. L’incontro prevede inoltre interventi del professor Romeo Farinella (UniFe_DA) dal titolo “Il ruolo del progetto urbano nelle strategie di rigenerazione delle città europee”, mirato ad approfondire alcuni recenti casi italiani e francesi e degli architetti Alessandro Cambi e Francesco Marinelli che introdurranno alcune “Riflessioni sull'esperienza di Paris Batignolles” presentando il progetto dello studio Scape (lotto 09, ZAC Clichy-Batignolles) all'interno del più vasto intervento di sviluppo dell'ex area ferroviaria di Clichy-Batignolles (Parigi).

Le attuali strategie nel governo del progetto urbano contemporaneo sono oggetto invece di un successivo evento organizzato in forma di “Round Table on the design issues of contemporary cities” che prevede, oltre ai protagonisti del seminario sulla rigenerazione urbana, anche interventi del professor Luca Emanueli (UniFe_DA) e dell’architetto e urbanista Francesco Nigro (3 e 4 novembre 2015).

Un secondo seminario previsto si compone anch’esso di due eventi distinti, ma con obiettivi condivisi.

Il primo tra essi è quello di mettere a confronto esperienze di ricerca dottorale nel macrosettore di riferimento 08-c1 con particolare riferimento agli aspetti legati alle metodologie di diffusione e valorizzazione de risultati delle ricerche. Ciò prende corpo nell’iniziativa autogestita da parte di PhD candidates e PhD (UniFe) intitolata OSDOT2.0(XI) il cui scopo è quello di enfatizzare gli aspetti metodologici e di indagine del problema scientifico affrontato, offrendo un punto di vista diretto sulla scelta delle metodologie e su gli aspetti più “pratici” dell’esperienza dottorale in un seminario intitolato: " Publishing strategies and scientific investigations: how to face them today?". A questa iniziativa partecipano – a seguito di una call for paper proposta sul sito www.osdotta.unifi.it - giovani ricercatori di ben sette scuole dottorali nazionali e di tre internazionali (Portogallo, Albania, New Zeland) per lo più in presenza, ma anche in videoconferenza.

Il secondo obiettivo è il tentativo di comprendere con esperti valutatori – nazionali ed internazionali – quali siano le prospettive di ottimizzazione e di valorizzazione dei prodotti di ricerca all’oggi per i Dottorandi/PhD candidates a livello nazionale, europeo o globale. Il titolo scelto per la Panel Discussion sul tema appare provocatorio, ma non lontano da considerazioni di grande attualità nel mondo della ricerca: “Publish or Perish? What Architectural Technology Project Design is asking for?”. Interverranno sul tema le professoresse M. Antonietta Esposito (UniFi_DiDA) Coordinator Osdotta Network, M.Chiara Torricelli (UniFi_DiDA_GEV macro area 08 VQR) e i professori Theo Zaffagnini e Vincenzo Riso (University do Minho, Guimararães, Portogallo). Quest’ultimo svolgerà anche il ruolo di Referee internazionale del seminario OSDOT2.0 (9 e 10 novembre 2015).

Il terzo e ultimo seminario connotante il workshop, avrà come titolo “Signs of Research” e si occuperà di approfondire alcune tematiche salienti e le metodologie della ricerca dottorale nell’ambito della progettazione architettonica e urbana. Il seminario intitolato: “Which sense in the PhD research on Architectural and Urban Design?” si connota come il primo di una serie curata dal professor Antonello Stella (UniFe_DA), e vedrà la partecipazione oltre allo stesso organizzatore, del professor Giovanni Corbellini (UniTs), di Hansmichael Hohenegger (ILIESI-CNR), del filosofo Marcello Ghilardi (UniPd) e dell’architetto Giovanni Garroni (13 novembre 2015).

Tutte le iniziative si terranno in Palazzo Tassoni Estense a Ferrara, sede del Dipartimento di Architettura, in via della Ghiara, 36.

Doctoral research: from pioneer theories to performance outcomes

An International workshop by Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara

The initial training period of all those people that are approaching the scientific field of research is critical and it will imprint in them the characteristics of the future scientists.

However it’s not always possible to have a preliminary stage dedicated on the focus of game rules of this mutable scenario, especially for all those that are enrolled in third level or PhD programs as it’s related to national or academic laws of the promoting institutions.  It’s mutable because of the change of the logics, the sequences and the procedural frameworks that - also if based on theories and methodologies recognized as standard nowadays or in the past - are constantly changing because of different reasons. The rising complexities define a new and punctual analysis of the formative models and a new adaptation to the ongoing demand. We can observe this today, as an example, in the interdisciplinary of researches or in the diffusion of studies on wide ranging application of  immaterial technologies/ICT . For this reason in the sphere of educational activities of the International Doctorate Architecture and Urban Planning of the Architecture Department of Ferrara University with Tirana Polis University and their PhD Consortium Associate Members, we conceived a workshop with the PhDs that could offer them different reading opportunities from the tendencies ongoing in the Curricular fields both of Architecture and Urban Planning that they are going to attend.

The Workshop of the International PhD course, in its second edition, is articulated in three different seminar initiatives alternating by meeting moments of the PhD candidates with the guests and their institutional professors and operative meetings on set topics.

We are going to start with the seminar, edited by Prof. Romeo Farinella, titled “Urban project and city Re-generation in the experience of Françoise Grether” that forsees the participation of the French urbanist - winner of the Gran Prix de L’Urbanisme 2012 - François Grether that is going to present some of his recent experiences (several that are still going on) of planning and management of the transformation processes of French urban areas such as, for example, Paris and Lyon. The meeting foresees also the interventions of professor Romeo Farinella (UniFe_DA) titled “ The role of Urban Design in the strategies of urban regeneration of European cities”, aimed at deepen some recent Italian and French cases followed by the two architects Alessandro Cambi and Francesco Marinelli that are going to introduce some “Considerations on the Paris Batignolles experience” presenting the design project of SCAPE Studio (lotto 09, ZAC Clichy-Batignolles) inside the vastest intervention of development of the ex- railway area of Clichy-Batignolles (Paris).

The actual strategies of governing of the urban project are the focus of the following “Round Table on the design issues of contemporary cities”. This event, in addition to the interventions of the previous guests speakers, includes speeches by professor Luca Emanueli (UniFe-DA) and by the architect and urbanist Francesco Nigro (Nov. 3rd – 4th 2015).

Another seminar, based on two different and consequential events, aims to achieve shared goals.

The first goal is to compare research experiences developed in the Italian macrosector 08-c1*  focusing in particular the adopted publishing strategies aimed to lead to the optimization and circulation of the research outcomes.

The seminar named OSDOT2.0 [XI] self-managed by PhD Candidates and PhDs with an International selected Scientific Committee, it is precisely targeted to emphasize the adopted methodology and tools of scientific investigation of the addressed problem. The Seminar titled " Publishing strategies and scientific investigations: how to face them today?" aims to offer a direct view on the logic that lead to the choice of a method and on the most “practical” aspects of the doctoral experience.

This event involves – following a call for paper appeared on the website www.osdotta.unifi.it - young researchers from seven Italian PhD Schools and three international (from Portugal, Albania and New Zeland) for the most part in Ferrara, but also by videoconference.

The second goal of the second PhD Seminar, edited by Prof. Theo Zaffagnini, is to understand with the help of expert evaluators – Italians and international – what are the prospects for the optimization and upgrading of the products of their research for PhD candidates both locally (with a specific focus on EU scenario) and globally. These will be the contents of the Panel Discussion titled: “Publish or Perish? What Architectural Technology Project Design is asking for ?”.This title, apparently provocative, however introduces a subject of great topicality in the scientific community of various countries. The interest lies in the differences between approaches to publishing strategies or more in general to the diffusion of research outcomes related to differently characterized scientific disciplines (as between Humanities and Scieces). Speaking on these issues the professors M. Antonietta Esposito (UniFi_DiDA) Coordinator Osdotta Network, M.Chiara Torricelli (UniFi_DiDA_Italian Evaluation Expert Group macroarea VQR), Theo Zaffagnini (UniFe_DA) and Vincenzo Riso (University do Minho, Guimararães, Portogallo). Professor Riso has been appointed as International Referee for this second seminar of the PhD Workshop IDAUP (November 9^th-10^th, 2015).

Coming to the third and final event of the Workshop, edited by Prof. Antonello Stella, it has been titled “Signs of Research”. It will focus on some relevant issues about the tools and methods of the architectural and urban design in doctoral research. The seminar, subtitled “Which sense in the PhD research on Architectural and Urban Design?” provides, in addition to the introduction of the promoter Antonello Stella (UniFe_DA), the interventions of professor Giovanni Corbellini (UniTs), Hansmichael Hohenegger (ILIESI-CNR), of the philosopher Marcello Ghilardi (UniPd) and of the architect Giovanni Garroni (November 13th, 2015).

All these events will take place in Ferrara at Palazzo Tassoni Estense, headquarter of the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara, Via della Ghiara, 36.
