Emotions and Architecture:
The Case of Cultural Public Buildings in Albania

Architecture is a nonverbal language and multi-sensorial experience which involves the collaboration of the sensorial and perceptual experience. It is a tool for transmitting emotions and psychological effects through atmospheres created by configurations, elements, characteristics and shapes. Throughout years, architecture has been a product of focusing in form, function and technology, leaving aside the importance of the involvement of all senses in designing architecture, such as vision, hearing and touch. Perception in architecture is the main focus of the research. It is an activity when the subject is aware of objects and properties present in a surrounding environment through physical sensations. It is an important process because it allows individuals to adapt to the environment. The main question is: How architecture is perceived when one of the most important senses, vision, is missing and what should it offer in order to provide an accessible design? To bring out conclusions it is necessary to focus on specific disciplines, such as Neuroscience and Phenomenology. Neuroscience in Architecture is the scientific study of the nervous system reaction to the built environment, as a consequence, to the psychological and emotional aspect. It is a challenge of adopting neuroscience to the need of architecture and analyzing how the design of buildings affects the human’s brain. Phenomenology in Architecture promotes the integration of sensory perception as a function of a built form. The dynamics of human perception, of the individual and the community, should influence design form and function, in terms of circulation and organization of an elastic program to produce sensory architecture. Architecture should be designed to serve the needs of human activity; therefore, creating a relationship between human senses and the building to transform into emotion.
